General Information Our program is a strong community-based emergency medicine experience! We work at two sister facilities, located on either side of the state line between West Virginia and Ohio allowing our residents to learn the nuances of different state laws and how they affect medical practice. Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC), our larger facility, acts as a regional referral center for several smaller facilities in the surrounding area. Our staffing model allows residents to take a progressively larger role in the operation of the ED as they move through the program. Typically, our residents have fulfilled the procedural requirement of the program by the end of their first year. We emphasize the practical use of ultrasound in many aspects of our ED care and our residents develop proficiency through practice, online teaching modules, and workshops. We are the only facility in our area where our attending staff is all Emergency Medicine Board Certified. ACGME/AOA Status We received ACGME accreditation in 2016. We are a 3 year program starting with the incoming class of 2016. We currently participate in the NRMP (ACGME) match. Didactics Program We have a strong didactics program at OVMC.

Our didactics occur every Thursday from 7:30 AM until 1 PM. This is “protected time”. The ED resident staffing schedule is modified so no resident works overnight the day before didactics allowing us all to be fresh and ready for this important educational activity. Didactics is a mandatory event for the residents. Usually, the didactic sessions starts with a case presentation by a medical student. We then review the answer and explanation for our weekly ECG quiz. We review interesting cases in a constructive, abbreviated M&M style with and open discussion between the residents and attendings about the case. There are resident-prepared lectures, oral and written board preparation, and attending lectures.

We reserve time for simulation lab on a monthly bases. We close each session with a joint internal medicine/emergency medicine lecture given by an attending or physician guest lecturer from 12 - 1 PM. We are fortunate to have an association with Ohio State University's Wexner Medical center through which we receive exclusive lectures from their faculty both onsite in-person and via exclusive video teleconference. We alternate using Rosen's and Tintinelli's Emergency Medicine texts as the core of our didactics. Once a month, we also have journal club in which two residents present carefully selected articles relevant to the practice of emergency medicine. The program provides us with a subscription to Rosh Review, an excellent board preparation question bank, and we have required quizzes every week. We also are provided with a subscription for HippoEM, an excellent Emergency Medicine training suite put out by the same people that make the famed EMRap podcast. To stay on top of the latest trends in emergency medicine, our fantastic librarian emails landmark articles on a weekly basis.
